Intelligent Steerable Lights
model specific for VW Golf V - universal version also available
The idea of ‘steerable’ headlights isn’t
new. Citroen offered them in the Sixties. What is new is the electronic technology
to make them
work properly and reliably. That technology is now avaiable and offered on
prestige
vehicles such as higher spec versions of the Discovery 3. Unfortunately that
technology comes at a price and is only offered on a handfull of cars. However
that is now changing. Leading VW specilists Volkspares are now offering a retrofit
upgrade for the VW Golf MkV to equip the car with intelligent steerable lighting.
The new lamps look like foglights but have the function of both foglights
and cornering lights. When driving on low beam, the cornering light
is activated
without delay when the turn indicator is operating or automatically when
driving round bends at speeds up to 40 km/h. Depending on requirements,
either the right
(in a right-hand bend) or left light (in a left-hand bend) is switched on.
When driving through bends, a yaw rate sensor measures the turning
speed of the vehicle
and supplies the switching pulse. After the bend, a dimmer gently switches
the light cone off again.
The Intelligent Steerable light package for the Golf V is model specific
and looks like original equipment when installed, but an alternative universal
model
is also available for other vehicles which looks like aftermarket fog lights.
Both packages come with control units, H7 bulbs, lamps, mountings and harness.
The lights can be DIY fitted but Volkspares recommend that they are fitted
and set up by a qualified garage that has MOT facilities (Volkspares can
offer this).
